August 28 iPhone hackerI was feeling a bit blue this morning after the M's failed to score even one run at last night's game when I saw this story. It brought a smile to my face. If you haven't yet heard the story of George Hotz you should. It's a perfect example of what our media/society values today. George is a high school grad heading off to college and spent the summer with two goals, fix up his car and hack his iPhone to open up the service so he doesn't have to use AT&T as a cell phone carrier. Never mind AT&T paid dearly for the right to be the only cell phone provider for the new 'must have' gadget. There must be a huge amount of power and satisfaction for knowing you could undue in a matter of hours a business transaction that no doubt took months and millions of dollars to ink. But that's not what made me chuckle. Seems George has found a way to accomplish his summer goal. He is trading his hacked iPhone (he tried to sell it on eBay) for a brand new car! Certicell a Kentucky based cell phone repair company has put themselves on the map and are surely getting millions of Google hits today because they have acquired the hacked iPhone from George. All it cost them was a brand new car. George traded his hacked iPhone for a car and a few new iPhones for him and his friends. I guess there is talk of future consulting gigs with Certicell. Who knows. What does Certicell plan to do with the hacked phone? Will they sell hacking iPhones as a new service in their product line? Quite possible. Will AT&T have something to say about it? Quite likely. But wow doesn't George have a great 'what I did over my summer vacation' story to tell on the first day of class. August 21 I did it!Sunday was the day. I competed in my first triathlon and I feel great. Here are a few pics from the day. The weather was uncooperative as you can see. It dumped rain which really only effected the bike portion. I met my goal of doing it under 2 hours. I did it in 1:51. I can totally see how it can become addicting. I am thinking about a bunch of different ways I can beat my time next year. There is actually a tri next month that I'm contemplating doing. Hmmm..... |
